【Introduction】 Introduction of Industrial Design Jury Panel of【TIDA 2020】2020/7/10

Taipei International Design Award has entered into the 13th year. Over the past decade, there have been tens of thousands of design works reviewed, many talent stars have risen from here while more international design concepts have also converged through the competition. The International Jury Panel definitely is the most important key factor of those fruitful results.

This year, the【TIDA 2020】Jury Panel continuously organizes according to the standard of international competition, the “convener mechanism”. Three high-profile design experts are invited to be the convener of each category, and other international design experts are invited under convener’s recommendation. Through professional and rigorous selection, outstanding works will be selected, potentially innovative ideas will be encouraged and explored.

This year, we invited 7 outstanding experts in Industrial Design to organize the jury panel:

Shikuan Chen (Convener) -- Chief Design Officer / Senior Vice President, Corp. Marketing and Innovation of Compal Electronics, Inc.

Shikuan Chen is Chief Design Officer (CDO) and Senior Vice President of the Marketing and Innovation office of Compal Electronics, Inc. in Taiwan, one of the world's largest research and development centers and computer manufacturers. He manages a team of more than 350 design experts. Shikuan is also a Board Member (2015-2019) of the World Design Organization (WDO/ICSID) and Professor of Design at Shih Chien University in Taipei. From 2000 to 2004 Shikuan served as Managing Director Greater China Region at GE/FITCH and from 2004 to 2009 as Global Account & Design Director at Philips Design. In 1995 he graduated from the Cranbrook Academy of Art(USA) with a Master of Fine Arts in Design.


Srini Srinivasan -- The President of World Design Organization (WDO)

Srini is the Chairman & CEO of LUMIUM Design, Inc. and has an MBA degree of University of Madras, India. Srini is also an active member of IDSA (Industrial Designers Society of America) and has various techniques and business background of instrumentation, consumer electronics, telecommunications and wireless equipment. Additionally, Srini is full of passion for product design and is good at integrating business strategy, product practicality and conceptuality, and design methods in product design.


Carolyn Steinbeck -- The Founder of Carolyn Steinbeck Gestaltung

Carolyn is a graphic design expert, she graduated from an American well-known design academy, Cranbrook Academy of Art and has founded an independent studio for graphic design in 1999. Carolyn is the winner of the 18th 100 Excellent Award by America Chicago Design Centre and also has multiple outstanding performances in international competition.


Brian Ling -- The Founder and Design Director of Design Sojourn

Brian Ling is an all-round leader of industrial design industry who has over 17 years of experience of leading design strategy. Brian is a high-profile expert of design strategy, design management, design thinking, and service design. Brian’s career life has involved multiple areas such as consumer electronics, healthcare, NGO, hotels, restaurants and retail. Furthermore, Brian has awarded several times by the prominent international competition such as iF, Red dot, and CES innovation award.


✨Prof. Cheng-Neng Kuan -- Honorary Chair Professor of Department of Industrial Design Shih Chien University

In 1980, Professor Cheng-Neng Kuan earned a master degree in Industrial Design (MID) from the Pratt Institute in New York.
He is currently an honorary chair professor and served as the vice president of Shih-Chien University, Taipei, Taiwan, from 2008 to 2017. With the aim of developing a more advanced design curriculum in Taiwan, he founded the Department of Industrial Design, in 1992. He served as department chair until 1999. Moreover, Cheng-Neng Kuan founded the School of Design in 1997 and had served as the dean from 1997 to 2004 and as the founding director of the Graduate Institute of Industrial Design from 1998 to 2007. He is a representative of Education Member (Shih-Chien University) of WDO (ICSID), also had held the position of the chairman of the board of Chinese Industrial Designers Association (CIDA), Taiwan. His fields of expertise include design strategy and management as well as design theory and creation. He is an active member of design juries in his home country and internationally. He is a consultant to major enterprises on product development and design strategy.


Martin Darbyshire -- The Founder and CEO of Tangerine

Martin who graduated from Industrial design, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design has served two terms as a board member of the World Design Organization (formerly ICSID) during which time he judged the World Design Capital 2014, and has been a juror for the prestigious Red Dot awards in Germany for over a decade. Martin was also formerly a visiting professor at Central Saint Martins, University of Arts, London and has been awarded the CIC International Award by UK Creative Industries Council.


Wan-Ru Chou -- Dean, College of Design, Shih Chien University

Wan-Ru Chou has a master degree of Product Design from Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna, Austria. She specializes in product design, color theory and application, design interpretation. Currently, she served as the convener of the product design review of the "CITDConventional Industry Technology Development" of the Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs and the examination member of the "Business Startup Award" of the Small and Medium Enterprise Administration, Ministry of Economic Affairs. Wan-Ru Chou was invited twice as a commentator of Design Summit St. Moritz held by Raymond Lowey Foundation International and the speaker of the Design Education Day, Hong Kong Design Week.
